The controller within the meaning of the GDPR is the University of Graz, represented by the Rectorate.
The Rectorate of the University is therefore also responsible for the realization, implementation and compliance with the obligations arising from the GDPR.

Data protection officer
With the applicability of the GDPR from May 25, 2018, the university was obliged to appoint a data protection officer.
The data protection officer
- performs the tasks without being bound by instructions and is obliged to maintain secrecy and confidentiality
- must be properly involved in all matters relating to the protection of personal data at an early stage.
The data protection officer is required by law to perform at least the following tasks:
- Informing and advising the Rectorate and employees with regard to data protection obligations
- Monitoring compliance with the provisions of the GDPR and other data protection regulations
- Raising awareness and training employees
- On request: advice in connection with the data protection impact assessment
- Point of contact for and cooperation with the data protection authority

Data protection coordination
Operational support for the implementation of the provisions of the General Data Protection Regulation and other data protection regulations is provided at the University of Graz by the Data Protection Coordination Office.
The Data Protection Coordination Office performs the following tasks, among others
- Advising all organizational and administrative units on all data protection issues (with the exception of third-party funded research projects)
- Support in the preparation and review of data protection documents (consents, data protection declarations, order processing contracts, agreements on joint responsibility, etc.)
- Supporting the data protection officer with employee training
- Administrative support for the register of processing activities

Third-party data protection research
To support researchers with externally funded projects, a separate advisory office has been set up in the Research Management and Services department.
This office supports externally funded projects
- by providing advice on all data protection issues and
- in the preparation and review of data protection documents (consents, data protection declarations, order processing contracts, agreements on joint responsibility, etc.).
